So here is 2017, for us in
Berkshire New Years Day was somewhat dreary with increasing drizzle as the day
went on. The winter scenery was a sad monotone, but this was a blip and most
days since have been cold and bright. Now is when we admire structure in the
garden and landscape, vibrant Cornus and
Willow stems, ghostly white Birch trunks and the gorgeous perfume from
Sarcococca. These are just few examples of the many plants which we need in a
garden to give us an interesting winter backdrop for Snowdrops and all those
courageous early bulbs which await a splash of winter sunshine to warm them
into growth. A visit today to The Hillier Arboretum near Romsey has really
whetted my appetite for coloured stems, peeling bark and winter delights, so
make time to do something similar. It was super.
As usual our annual ‘Snowdrop Saturday will be held this
year on 11 February 2017. On this day visitors are able to view the Snowdrop Collection within the
Garden, see examples of Snowdrops in a
Pot and Photograph Exhibition, meet & talk to Snowdrop Gardeners, enjoy a
welcome cup of tea or mug of St. Michael’s Soup and buy a Snowdrop or two! There
will be many Snowdrop occasions such as ‘Walks’ and ‘Garden Opens’ throughout
the country so see what is on in your local area.
Locally visit Welford Park in Berkshire, here Galanthus nivalis
‘en mass,’ in spendour, they are a wonderful sight, the
grounds are open throughout February (check the website.) On Thursday
23rd February Welford Park will have it’s annual MacMillan Plant
